What is Nepali Unicode?

Nepali Unicode is the international standard encoding system (UTF-8) for writing Devanagari script digitally. Unlike legacy fonts (like Preeti or Kantipur) that require specialized fonts installed on your computer, Unicode text renders universally across all modern smartphones, Facebook, websites, government portals, and search engines.

Romanized vs Traditional Unicode Layouts

  • Romanized Unicode: Types phonetically according to English sounds (e.g., "k" for क, "kh" for ख, "g" for ग). Perfect for everyday users, chat, social media, and bloggers.
  • Traditional Unicode: Mirrors the mechanical typewriter/Preeti keyboard layout. Preferred by professional typists in government offices and legal courts.

  • namaste → न + म + स् + ते = नमस्ते
  • kranti → क् + रा + न् + ति = क्रान्ति
  • shanti → शा + न् + ति = शान्ति
